Global Warming Indeed ? The Word “ Normal Temperature”(July 26th, 2011)

Hiroshi Nakamura

Thank you very much for your usual cooperation.
We often hear a word of “Normal Temperature”in weather news.
Many of us think that we do know what the word means, but actually often we do not know its meaning accurately. Mr. Mitsuyoshi Kitamura at Kochi Meteorological Observatory tells us the actual meaning on the article in “Life And Agriculture (Kurashi-to-Nogyo)” volume 25, published by The Agricultural Development and Extension Association of Kochi. According to his article, we can tell that the global warming is getting worse in Kochi.

“Normal temperature” means the average temperature of 3 decades. The previous normal temperature which was used from 2001 was the average of 1971 to 2000, and the new normal temperature which is used now is the average of 1981 to 2010.
The new normal temperature is 0.4 degreeC higher in Kochi City compared to the previous one, and 0.3 higher in Muroto Cape, Shimizu, and Sukumo.

His explanation is like the scales fell from eyes.
Generally it is said that it’s hard to grow lilies in condition upper than the average temperature of 25 degreeC. Especially for growing in severe late summer heat, we need more devices and understanding about each variety’s characteristics, growing technology and so on. On the other hand, warmer winter might be advantage for growers
It will be interesting to have some research in your areas too.
