We have started to harvest for the oriental liliums in New Zealand in last weekend. The maturing and dying of the leaves was much earlier than last year.
This means approximately 2 weeks more mature compared to last year. We can proceed for the digging and processing day by day from now on.
Scales of the bulbs are very hard and many varieties the stems can come out of the bulbs without any difficulty. So bulbs process smooth and much easier than last year.
We also already received more cold temperature in the soil. Now soil temperature is appr 3~4 degree Celsius. It makes sprout development is nice. The bulbs gave large fat sprouts this season.
The main point we want to inform you is for the enlargement of the bulbs. This season due to warmer summer and less rainfall during the summer the bulbs have not grown as large like last season.
As last year was extreme good enlargement, this season we now conclude that enlargement is just normal as expected and sometimes less than expectation.
What we do expect for the harvest numbers is that we get enough size 12/14 and 14/16.For sizes 16/18 and 18/20 we expect we can get less quantity than we have estimated. We think shortages can occur.
We do our best to inform the crop result variety by variety in quick time like last season. So each time when we have the final result for a variety than we inform this to you.
We do not expect stocks to be remained after crop have been finished.
With best regards,
Hans Daman.
