Members say yes to merge Dutch auctions (December 3rd, 2007)

From Dutch flower magazine “Flower TECH” volume 10 No.7, 2007

The Netherlands-Members of Dutch flower auctions FloraHolland and Aalsmeer voted with a large majority in favour of the merge between the two auctions. The election took place on the 19th of September, at the auctions’ annual meetings, which was held at the same time. For the merge, which will come into force on the 1st of January 2008, a two-thirds majority of the votes was needed. With 85% of the votes in favour in Aalsmeer and 79% at FloraHolland, this was easily achieved.
In Aalsmeer, 50% of the total value of the votes took place at the election and 41% at Floraholland. The value of a vote of each member depends on the auction turn-over. The total disclosed shows that there were a lot of members who did not vote; but compared to other annual meetings the attendance was high.
The atmosphere at both meetings was calm and positive. At Aalsmeer some members took the floor to express their objections against the merge, while some argued in favour of the merge. At FloraHolland there were only positive responses from members who took the floor. By giving their votes, members supported the goals of the auction board and management to strengthen their market places. According to them it is more efficient to work together. The merged auction wants to attract more flowers and plants, also from abroad, to build a stronger market place.

Notes:
Annual amount of dealing in flower auction is about 6 billions in Japan and Holland. Only one auction (it will be like agricultural association) deals with them in Holland from next year, on the other hand, about 200 auctions in Japan.
