Regarding production in New Zealand and Chile, here we inform you the variety list which we will deal.
It includes the varieties whose Japan lot number are not confirmed yet, so title is “provisional version”.
I also report you related information as below.
1 Climate in both country is good start
New Zealand Van Zanten’s report
Generally spring was warmer and we made good start.
Planting was done on schedule, sprouts came out well and also we could manage some night frost happened.
November was cooler and growth became slow, then middle of December were unstable weather. Growing so far is on schedule and disbudding were finished.
By the warm spring, generally stem roots grew very well like one of the best, and already some have few cm enlargement. When the weather stays good, we can expect good crops.
Chile Southern Bulbs report
Temperature in Spring to early summer had been higher than usual. November to beginning of December was unstable weather, like snow in mountain or high temperature with good sunshine.
Summer is warmer like last year, and growth is in progress at the moment.
In northern hemisphere, climate is unstable and generally warmer due to El Nino effect, and southern hemisphere is also same impression. By the above reports, spring is warmer and growth so far seems good. Sometimes climate tendency is different depending on the district, so I will visit each production areas in beginning of February, and inform you further details.
2. Demand estimation and price setting start now
Bulb production company in SH count gross area and check growing condition at this moment, and make precise crop estimation.
Price setting will be discussed since now, according to balance of demand and supply.
Following 3 situations are thought to be the major factors.
- Flower sales result of Chinese new year in Asian countries
It is the biggest demand period in a year in China and Taiwan, and especially Vietnam seems producing half of one year quantity for it.
In Taiwan, south Chine, Vietnam, many lily is grown outside even in winter, which most part is for demand period, but quite influenced by climate.
Doesn’t matter which country or variety of flowers, outside production highly concentrated for demanded day become very high risk and uncertainty for flower auction and market.
Temperature in general Asia this year is high in autumn-winter as Japan, people say the cutting in there is already peak and some fields were even finished.
2. Unstable exchange rate of currency
Internationally bulbs is deal by Euro, but production cost is based on currency of each country (NZ Dollar, Chilean Peso), and influenced by exchange rate. Currency of both country against Euro at this moment is some lower compare to last year same period, but it will be difficult to define the further level in this unstable financial market.
3. Virus and Lot cleaning
It’s the same in Southern Hemisphere, production decrease due to bulb quality (to destroy infection lot), and increase with common / new varieties, and adjusted to world wide demand.
These days, bulb growers are struggling with virus control, sometime unintentionally received infections by renewing lot or starting new variety (through mother bulb or planting material from Holland, for example), still there are no completely clear grower.
We make following actions to deliver you good quality bulbs, by the visit to production area, and exchange information of result at customers and our lot number test with Exporters and Growers.
- Collect right information about result of SH crop 2015
We test the each variety and lot number at Variety test greenhouse and Lot number test greenhouse, and we inform the result to bulb grower through Exporter if we find the subject to discuss.
Now we can use more than 100 bulbs for each sample in Lot number test greenhouse, and became able to confirm specific and realistic (not political) results which we couldn’t see well by the test with 10 bulbs.
2. Latest information in visit of bulb production
Nowadays, to replant old planting material from commercial field is getting less, and every year propagation is done by scaling.
That’s why, the strain of lot in last year and this year is sometimes different at same grower and same variety.
Also production fields move every year.
Some grower produce in several districts or contract growers, and there are several fields in different condition, and also several lot numbers are there sometimes.
One eye-witness is better than many hearsays. To visit is rather important, I feel.
3. Risk analysis at harvesting time
Climate is getting more unstable year by year in the global warming, so we can’t ignore that weather and operation in harvesting time influence to bulb condition, so we can’t ignore that weather and operation in harvesting time influence to bulb condition.
During our investigation in harvesting time every year, we sometimes see unexpected incident (including crop result), but overall experience help us to supply good bulbs in the end.
After above 2nd and 3rd step, we try 1st step of lot number test again, that give us chance to discover the relations between characteristic of bulb production side and result of flower forcing.
3. When you make order
Some of LA Hybrid varieties such as Yellow Diamond NZ, Party Diamond NZ, Bonsoir CH are now out of production. Please check by NL crop 2015.
